Are You a Unicorn?

Though it hasn't always gone by that name, I have been in and out of the Alterhuman community since the early 00's.

I found whispers of it on werewolf webpages here and there--quizzes and lists and stuff like that. At the time, I thought it was just people playing pretend since I was brand new to the online roleplaying scene. My first real instance of hey-you-might-not-be-human-on-a-spiritual-level was when I was browsing some web pages about unicorns and how they were linked with Christianity (I was raised a back pew Baptist) and happened across information on this book:

Now, I had ALWAYS been an animal kid. Running around on all fours, always demanding to be an animal when we played house, never watching or reading anything unless it was about an animal or someone who turned INTO an animal. I only wanted to play animal-based video games and only drew animals. I disliked hunting but I would play hunting games to be in the woods with the deer. This is a trait that lasted WELL into adulthood. I'm still very animal-oriented in my interests, but I've broadened my tastes haha.

Anyway, the idea that I could remain a faithful Christian (something I was terrified about always) AND 'be a creature' at the same time without getting in trouble hit me like a line of coke. I RAN to Amazon and ordered Are You A Unicorn? I remember being so excited when it arrived and read it as fast as I could. Unfortunately, the book was...not very good. Poorly researched and full of blurry .jpegs of the same ten images I'd already seen on every unicorn webpage, the book didn't give me any of the answers I craved. It didn't give me the Special Permission to be an animal. Still, I knew Something Was Different about me.

This is the part where I tell you I am autistic. I didn't consider this until I was in my 30's even though looking back, it was reeeeally obvious. I have OCD and a lot of traits of OCD and autism overlap, but the thing about OCD is it's driven by fear and the autism behaviors come from a different place. Intense periods fixating on subjects, texture issues, extreme morality, needing to know the 'why' of tasks asked of me, dislike of loud noises, existing more in my head than in my body. Also, I was in a special class called "Enrichment" for most of elementary school and some middle school.

But for the time being, I pushed my Otherness aside. I actually looked down on people who said they were spiritually a wolf or whatever because I was upset I couldn't have that and how could they do that and be a Christian because EVERYONE was a Christian, right? Right?? Even my favorite cartoon characters?? Nobody I knew was going to Hell right? We'll put a pin in that.

Wolfy

I learned what a furry was in the early 00's. I found out there were things called furry weekends and furry cons and people dressed up as animals and did activities. Before I understood that furry was its own thing, I just called any anthro characters I saw "weres". Eventually I would find Goldenwolf's classic art explaining the difference.

(Art by Goldenwolf)

I would spend hours looking through the fursuiting Livejournal community and checked it every day. Most importantly, there was something called "fursonas" which were an animal usually accompanied by a design you made that other people would then refer to you as. I had always drawn 'me as a wolf' but I didn't have a NAME to put to it or a community to be a part of until I found Furry. I was really into it until I realized that people Did Not Like furries. Then I started hiding it. I denounced it all. Then came back to it. A pattern that would define the next decade.

But I was a wolf. I knew I had sharp teeth and paws and ears that moved. I knew I was meant to run on all fours. Dreams where I could Run were always my favorite. I drew myself as a wolf and it was me in the realest way I could express—realer than if you'd cut me open and pulled out my insides. BUT it was just pretend. Just a daydream. Just me being "creative" with my imagination. But it was always so, so personal to me. Sacred.

The Fursona is sacred to me and it would become more important to me than I could ever imagine.

Otherkin on Tumblr dot Com

The word Otherkin hits tumblr in the mid 2010's. Homestuck is everywhere. People are fighting. It's mostly kids, but there are some adults mixed in there too. Everybody wants to be valid. There are therians and there are otherkin and there are weres. There are witches and fairies and everyone is bullying everyone. This time is very blurry for me but I remember looking on and thinking 'haha at least I'm not like THEM im a normal christian furry im so normal lmaoooo' i would make fun of otherkin with a friend of mine and seek out their stuff to point in laugh. Get a load of this guy!

But years pass and I forget. Was that crazy or what?

I make friends with a fellow adult who shares that he is a transgender man and a therian. A rat. I think, but you're an adult with a job and a house! How can you think that? There is only God and Man and Woman. But no, he is chill and mature and simply includes his animalness as a PART of his identity. The identity can be made of so many parts. Gender being only one of them. I think about this. I think back to the Unicorn. I, the adult, read The Field Guide.

I start to cry. The broken piece of me from my childhood comes back and it still fits so perfectly.

At the same time, another friend I meet, another adult, practices Daemonism. I think, what? People out here creating self soothing tulpas? In SOCIETY??? What on earth! But they are kind to me and simply explain their way of life. I read the literature (and see the people infighting) but I try it. The Daemon I "see" is a female doe named Iyuih. I look at the cross and I sweat.

How can I be a transgender therian and still get into Heaven?

Deer World

It happens on a cusp. I start finally outgrowing my Wolfy fursona. The design is being used for a fully separate character I plan on writing and publishing books about. I can't be in those books. Nobody can know that was me. I have to be come something else.

At the same time, my older sister dies in my house.

I create Crownless, the deer. She becomes the new me. It starts slow.

Peep that short haircut. For the first time since childhood I had short hair. I felt Different. I was Stealth Boy. Stealth Deer. Even to myself. I could draw goofy comics of "Wolfy" in her anthro form and more serious stuff could be about my deer. For a very brief time, internally, Wolfy and Crownless interacted.

One of the last pictures of Wolfy-as-me I drew. I fully became Crownless. Crownless was who I was as an adult, though an inexperienced one. I used Crownless to explore my gender. I identified with the deciduous nature of deer antlers and the way they change throughout the year. My reasoning was "you can't tell what sex a deer is at a distance during winter" and I was going through one hell of a winter.

Three years later, my dad dies in the very same room in my house. Months later, my step mom moves out without talking to me about it first. I am alone in the house. For years. I sink deep into this deer identity.

I become: an asshole. I become pretentious with my deer interest. Deer needed to be Just So or they were WRONG and it proved they didn't LIKE DEER the way I LIKED DEER. I was the best DEER LIKER!!! It was very stupid but I think it needed to happen. I needed to wear myself out on something pointless.

At this time, I think I have the whole gender thing figured out, that I am a man now and I ought to act like one. But something is weird and off and different and I can't figure it out. The deer's body doesn't fit and I can't stretch out. I buy books about deer I buy books about deer I buy books about deer. Everybody knows I am a deer everybody sens me deer in the mail and deer pictures in my DMs and are thinking of me and so kind. But I cannot feel the tail I'm supposed to have, the teeth I know I have. I stretch and stretch and something breaks.

2020 and the Mind Prison

I discover my sexuality in my mid thirties. I discover my true gender: genderfluid. Nonbinary. Fits like a glove in that it isn't a glove that fits! Took long enough. Up until then, I had been identifying as asexual and transmasc. The Ace community was very kind to me and I think fondly of them. The queer community around me is my home. But I had to admit that I had kinks and fetishes and needed an outlet for them. I experimented with petplay but it got so muddy in my mind. How could I be a guy who was a deer pretending to be a dog??? THAT'S TOO MANY LAYERS. At least that's what I thought then.

I rejected any and all imagery of deer. Of Crownless. Of myself. I threw myself into this fursonaless void for a little while and spiraled until I came out the other end as a pink digital dog.

The Pink Dog stands for so much. It is still sacred to me, the fursona, the self. I am told that Crash is the closest to 'me' that I've gotten. That when they look at them, they see me. It's important that they're pink. Growing up, I always prided myself on "showing restraint" in my character designs. I was a dog but not a SPARKLE DOG I was a deer BUT NOT A UNICORN (I saw so many deer becoming unicorns it was honestly funny ilu unicorn deer live your lives you're beautiful and I envied you so so hard). I had like this whole dramatic story in my head about a deer that became a unicorn but only SPIRITUALLY because I could never physically achieve what MY unicorn would be (aka top surgery).

The Mind Prison was where I lived. And I was not alone. As much as I wanted to strip Crownless away and forget those long years of my life I spent deep in mourning and learning to function as an adult on my own, she was still there. He was still there. I was still there.

My misery was leaking onto this fresh new fursona who was supposed to be all about The Future, moving on, getting better, being better, and healing. But I couldn't deny who I'd been. I brought Crownless back but this time as a foil to Crash. A place for me to put all my hard feelings. This lasted about a year, me having them side by side. But then they fell in love.

I have never experienced anything like this. Crash and Crownless. Me and Me. Together, entwined, in love, sucking AND fucking. My body and my brain are two different things, but neither of them are me. I'm just in here. We're just in here. Hate it here. But we persist.

Hell's Not Real

About a year ago I was sitting in the drive-thru line at the bank and feeling Some Kind of Way. The song Dear God by XTC came on. It was the perfect storm and something just...snapped. I haven't talked about my faith much in this yet because now is the time for it.

As stated above, I was raised fire and brimstone Baptist. It was miserable. I hated every second of it. I was terrified of God and what he would do to me when I finally died if I forgot to ask for forgiveness of X or Y sin. After all, he can take back you being saved. He can do that. He's God. And if he does then you were never saved in the first place. You didn't believe and repent hard enough so it's your fault. It's always your fault. You're worthless, your dirt! That was what The Bible taught me. The American Deep South is a fucking tar pit. You either join the cult, leave, or get killed eventually.

What you let your government do to other people, they will eventually do to you.

I had a short stint in my youth where I stopped believing in God. I was like 13 and full of hate and rage but then got to have my redemption when I came to Christ. I bettered myself, right? I was now better than other people, right? That was what the church taught me.

But having online friends of differing faiths allowed me to ask questions. You don't ask questions in Baptist church. You just believe because that's what you were put here to do. Never mind the wars, the cancer, the plague, the cycle of abuse. I was told never to marry outside my denomination because my husband was surely going to Hell if he wasn't Baptist. It's all in God's plan and we aren't supposed to understand it.

And why would God let little kids that are murdered go to heaven but not once they reach some nebulous age where they are capable of understanding God's grace? We are pushed to go into countries who are starving and give them water and food but only if they sing Jesus Loves Me with us. Why not hide God's name so no one knows about him so everyone can be excused and go to heaven? God knows what will happen yet gives us free will? Does he know that if he creates this person they will go to hell? What was the purpose? For them to feature as a side character in a faithful person's story? Is he so wealthy in resources and so bankrupt in morals that he can make human garbage forever and ever until Hell fills up? And then what? He throws the devil in a lake of fire? And then what of the damned? The world was supposed to end so many times. It will never end. Everyone in the South is sick.

MADNESS. LEG-CHEWING MADNESS IN THE TRAP. IN THE TRAP I AM IN THE TRAP WE ARE ALL IN THE TRAP!!!

Anyway, I was expelled from heaven.

Duality

Crash and Crownless are both me and they are both each other and they are in love. We live in this body and try to survive day by day, taking meds, eating vegetables, and going on stupid little walks. I have a girlfriend and a good job and a house that belongs to me even though it's falling apart.

Alterhuman

A coyote friend, a therian, leads me into virtual reality one night and I follow. I hear there are adult therians and otherkin who will talk to me about their experiences. They are there. There are foxes and snakes and birds and cats and so so so many dogs.

I pay twenty US dollars for an avatar base and my coyote friend paints my colors onto it. I put it on and load up VRC. I look in the mirror and see myself.

THE FOLLOWING IS A TEST ENTRY FOR MOVING MY BLOG POSTS FROM NEOCITIES TO DW

I have loved roleplay since 2004. I started on forums and instant messangers and then moved to Furcadia and eventually came to find my home on Dreamwidth. I play both original and fandom characters. My earliest days, I mained my fursona at the time, Wolfy. Wolfy was, as you may have guessed a wolf, but I haven't really gotten involved in capital W Wolf RP before. The characters I've played her off of were always people or furries.

ENTER: The Island of Mezaai in the year of our lord 2026.

TIOM is a free wolf rp game on Roblox. There are MANY wolf rps on Roblox and none of them ever grabbed my attention--mostly because I have no idea what to RP a wild wolf doing. And they were all pretty freeform with no guidance so I was like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. In general I don't mess around much on Roblox unless a friend and I are playing a game because there are A Lot of Kids and I Do Not want to talk to them. No hate, but I just wanna talk to other adults. Recently my friend told me that they introduced a SPLIT where if you have an age verified account you only see other 18+ players' chats. NICE. This made me more willing to explore the game again.

Back to TIOM. My friend Rinley told me about it because we were sharing various roleplaying misadventures. He plays around on the game sometime and has really had a good time. He in fact, made a power point introducing the game. One slide featured an in-game OOC museum you could visit which detailed the history of the game itself and also boasted an exhibit explaining all of the game's lore. This game actually has lore. Factions. Worldbuilding. My ears perked up and I asked for a tour.

Here is the part of the museum that tells about the history of the game. There's also a wing for spotlighting community art! there's more than what I showed here, so go give 'em a look!

Here are some pictures of the lore section of the museum. There are two parts of it. One part contains a quick guide called The Basics that you can read and then jump right in and play. The other part contains more detailed exhibits about the world including some stuff your wolf will not know in-character. I spent about two hours in this museum just looking at everything. I was so impressed. TIOM has been running for about 15 years by a tiny team of volunteers. They do it for the love of the game. They're also very involved in the community discord. The game map is also very pretty and has lots of locations for scenic roleplaying including a forest, a crystal mountain cave, a desert, and of course WOLF HELL. If you're interested in reliving your childhood with some oldschool wolf RP, I highly reccomend dropping into The Island of Mezaai and saying hello!

The "FUCK YOU I'M A DRAGON" Meme!

Dragons have always been and will always be popular. Everyone loves dragons.
If somebody tells you they don't love dragons, they're either lying or wrong.
Nearly every culture features dragons and so do thousands of movies, books, and tv shows.
But sometimes, sometimes those medias DON'T have dragons. It's time to fix that.

Play your favorite dragon or AU your character as the fire-breathing terror lizard they were always meant to be!

DRAGON GENERATOR
Need some dragon PBs? We got that.
Make you a goddamn dragon.

DRAGON PROMPTS
Try to specify if you're playing a dragon or non-dragon and what kind of interaction you'd like but you could also not. I'm not the boss of you. Live your dreams, you beautiful motherfuckers.

1. What was that noise? Protect your hoard from nasty little hobbitses!
2. Time to kidnap some princesses (or princes!)
3. Burninate the countryside. Burninate the peasants. Nobody can stop you. Or can they?
4. Your character wasn't a dragon before, but now they suddenly are. GOOD.
5. All good things must come to an end. You are the last dragon. What now?
6. Your dragon is trapped, injured, or ill! Will someone come to their rescue or finish them off?
7. You are a dragon and a dragon rider. Go have adventures!
8. You know what wins an argument? Fire.
9. Wizards and shit I don't know. Go oldschool AU.
10. Extra extra! Dragon in New York City! Drop your poor lizard into a world of technology! You aren't on your dragon turf anymore. Shit.
11. Maybe your dragon is good! Chase down some bullies for a nerdy little boy or something. Eat them.
12. There is a website called Bad Dragon for a reason.
13. A super serious dragon war is happening.
14. Maybe your dragon doesn't WANT to be a dragon. What a loser.
15. The crowd cheers as your opponent enters the ring. Are you the reigning champion or dragon chow?
16. Rush out the door with a half-chewed knight in your mouth! You're late for dragon school!
17. You sure do love humans, you wish they were real! You think about them all the time and even play a nerdy game called Highways and Humans. But one day you MEET ONE!!!
18. You've found a dragon egg and now it's hatching! This could be adorable or end horribly.
19. I literally can't think of anything else I'm so tired.

Please steal this dumb meme and enjoy it till your heart's content!

After your character arrives from [LINK TO CIRCUS] on a pitch black buggy pulled by two real flaming night mares they are greeted by the manor.

[HAUNTED HOUSE]
It towers over the street with all its crooked windows lit in ghoulish green. The siding has all been painted black. Pumpkins and Pumpkaboo overflow from every available ledge and smile grimly out at passers by. Walk by the wrong one and you're in for a scare! What seems to be a localized thunderstorm (rain dance + thunderbolt) boils overhead but has not yet released its downpour. Carnival music wails from somewhere. Noibat, TWENTY OF THEM, swoop down at the guests waiting in line. On the front lawn, Jack stands behind a rickety ticket booth dressed head to toe as a carnival barker in bold green and orange, his face painted in a grim echo of his true self. He waves his straw hat to the gathering customers and laughs darkly to himself as screams reverberate from the house behind him.

Guests are herded in as groups as small as one and as large as six and are spaced out fifteen minutes apart so that one can always hear the others' terror.

The house takes a good twenty to thirty minutes to go through at a brisk walk and that's if you don't get lost or distracted with the mirrors and puzzles. The tail-end of the maze will land guests in the foyer where they began with the entire ghoulish cast of pokemon hot on their heels, seeing them all the way to the exit. Any guests wanting to go through a second time will find a completely different experience. The walls seem to have...to have moved!

Price of admission is 1500P.

[HAUNTED MAZE]
This year the attraction has grown! Behind the house sprawls a hedge maze filled with fog and spooks. The maze is complex, draped in spiderwebs, lined with pumpkins, and has an enormous foggy fountain in the center. Anyone who reaches this fountain will retrieve a voucher for a free Rare Candy from Jack himself. It wouldn't be Halloween without candy! The hedges move thanks to some mischievous Skiddo and a Carnivine. Cast members from the house may also be found in the maze.

Anyone who tries to cheat by climbing the hedges or using a flying pokemon will find themselves scolded by the hoard of Noibat circling above.

The maze is not part of the house walk-through and is a separate attraction. Price of admission is 800P.

[SAFETY]
Those whose who need a less rattling path for any reason only need to tell Jack and he will inform the house to be sure to guide them on the correct walk-through. Gentle as it is, it still has all the TLC put into it that one would expect from the Pumpkin King.

Anyone who wants to leave the house or maze early for any reason need only call out "ROTTEN PUMPKINS" and Eric the Yamask will appear to escort them out.

SPOOKY HOUSE SPECS:
Within the house, any great number of things can befall the guests! Once upon a time, the house was a normal mansion. There are three floors plus the basement and attic to explore and the walls have been arranged into a maze with branching paths. The halls are strewn with cobwebs, bones (where did they come from???) questionable splatters and splashes of colorful clownish paint.

- hidden alcohol stashes left behind by Rangiku from years ago that Jack STILL hasn't found
- rotating wall panels to split up groups
- fake drop-away floors that reveal illusions of pits, fire, enormous snapping mouths and the like
- floors that turn into slides
- hall of mirrors
- hidden passages revealed by the turn of a candle stick or pressed key on a piano etc...

CREEPY CAST:
These ghouls are trained scare-actors. The team is made up of both Pokemon and people. They will pop out at your characters from every angle and will be using their attacks to alter their surroundings and make noise. This year, courtesy of Envy, everyone has had their face painted into both twisted and funny visages. Several scare-actors are clowns. Horrible, horrible clowns in honor of Joker and his wonderful circus.

POKEMON
20 Noibat
1 Skunktank
1 Arbok
2 Murkrow
1 Houndoom
1 Driftloon
5 Hastly
1 Haunter
2 Zoroark
1 Carnivite

HUMANS

Thread all month long till your heart's content! Human cast members may drop in on threads at random to deliver a scare. If you would not like threadjacking just say so in your subjectline!

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Henry Townshend
Age: Canon: "late 20's" Going to go with 28
Canon: Silent Hill 4: The Room
Canon Point: Just before the end-battle when Henry leaps down the hole that he discovered behind his wall.
Character Information: http://silenthill.wikia.com/wiki/Henry_Townshend

Personality:

If you were to walk past Henry, it would probably take you one or two more passes to actually notice him. He’d sooner be part of the furniture than be part of the party. Actually, he'd rather not be at a party at all. Social situations can send him into panic attacks. Thinking about having to be in social situations can make him nauseous. When he does brave the world outside his apartment, he prefers to simply stand back and take everything in as if he were watching a documentary. He is content to imagine conversations between himself and others or photograph them instead of approaching them. When important information needs to be shared, he has a war within himself and usually ends up staying silent. He means well, but doesn't always act on it. He's so prone to keeping his opinions to himself that even if he believes something totally different than you, he’ll usually smile his awkward, vacant smile and go along with it.

Henry often appears to space out, his mouth forming a grim, emotionless line. On the rare occasion he does decide to participate in conversation, his words often become non sequiturs. Mr. Townshend comes in two volumes: a near undecipherable murmur and a startling howl. The poor boy’s not 100% sure how to interact verbally and has problems judging where his inside and outside voice would best fit. His conversations rarely have ‘uhms’ or ‘ah’s’ in them. He’s to-the-point and may even come of as a little rude. His shyness can be mistaken for snobby artistic indifference.

There is one area where he expresses himself without restraint and that is his photography. Henry's photos mostly consist of what would be considered 'weird hipster photos that try too hard' but he can take nice portraits and landscape pictures as well. He used to travel often and take pictures to remember his trips but now he's become a homebody. He was always the one taking photos at family get-togethers.

When he’s not sight seeing and taking pictures, Henry likes reading old books he’s collected over the years, watching television, and having a good smoke. He likes those artsy films where nobody speaks any English or dubbed films. He doesn't have a problem with the voices and mouths not matching up because what he likes most is the way the films are shot and the way the scenes are framed. He probably couldn't tell you what half of them are about.

Henry is lazy. While he grooms himself well enough (or at least well enough not to wrinkle the nose of passers by), he still appears very unkempt. He doesn't bother shaving his face every day or combing his hair or making sure his shirt is tucked in. He doesn't present himself to the world enough to feel the need to impress others. All of his clothing smells like smoke and since he never has visitors he's content to keep his home minimally stocked. A couple of lonely bottles of chocolate milk and wine were all that sat in his fridge for days while he gathered up the gumption to finally figure out why there were chains on his door.

Being thrown headfirst into adventure has put the drowsy homebody on edge. He was fast to give up pounding on his door and windows when the chains appeared but when a big creepy hole opened up in his bathroom he managed to suppress his fear of what he might find on the other side and climb on through. When he encountered the strangeness on the other side, Henry took it all in with a sort of numb awe. He went from crawling through a hole to a weird magical escalator? Okay. He even managed to have an entire conversation with the first person he met on the other side (something he considered a small self victory at the time) but that quickly went south when she was promptly murdered by a ghost. From then onward every new face brought new pain for Henry.

He was either afraid of them like the strange man in the coat or afraid for them such as his neighbor Eileen or the mysterious little boy who was always a step ahead of him. Henry is a sensitive soul. He cares about the well-being of others and feels sorrow when presented with death--going so far as to close the eyes of a deceased person he had only known for a few hours.

Even though he isn’t terribly outgoing, it doesn’t mean he’s completely non-reactive. When given no route of escape, Henry will turn and fight with whatever he can find to protect whoever he is with. Chunks of wood, stray golf clubs, or even broken bottles (if they aren’t broken, he’ll break them) are snatched up and put to use right away. Henry eventually encounters weapons beyond broken pipes and shovels--some serious firepower! Even though he has absolutely no experience using them and terrible aim he tries his best anyway, ready and willing to take whatever the otherwold hands him. The noise makes his ears ring and he recoils with every shot but he keeps collecting bullets.

He quickly loses any squicks he previously had about fighting after facing monster after monster. At first he approaches them at a cringe only to later walk into them swinging his pipe wildly, depending on all the balled up fear he has inside him to propel him through. He’s not afraid to touch scary statues or dead bodies. He doesn't crybaby about slamming his shoes down on bloated blood-sucking slugs or gigantic twitching two-headed baby monsters--and this surprises him. In fact every brave feat he accomplishes surprises him. By the end of his adventure he finishes off monsters with gusto--especially with the shovel. He tries not to let the feeling that he is falling prey to whatever strange grooming this world is imposing on him distract him from his mission but it does anyway. What is this place turning him into? Henry doesn't like change.

One such change being that he has discovered that the long empty halls and creaky bridges and foggy forests of Walter's other worlds have made him very lonely. Lonely! Henry Townshend doesn't get lonely. Henry spends as much time as possible alone. He becomes so starved for human interaction that he takes to watching his neighbor through a hole in his wall whenever he stops by his apartment even though he knows she can't hear him. The only reward he gets for that is a scary rabbit doll pointing accusingly at him. Maybe he deserves to be lonely. He's 21/21. Was all this happening just so this Walter guy could get to him?

He hoards information, having started an extensive paper pile/scrap book made from journal entries and newspaper clippings he has collected during his journey through Walter's other worlds. He is the Receiver of Wisdom as part of the sacraments and he plays his part fairly well. He spends hours wearily pouring over the clues Joseph left behind and sympathizes with him--especially the headaches. He inspects and gathers unusual trinkets he happens upon and quickly starts trying to fit them into the puzzle that his life has become. Anything that's oddly positioned or anything that seems out of place will grab his attention and no doubt wind up in his pockets.

He worries about the well-being of this safe haven. Though his research taught him how to keep the hauntings at bay he's not dumb enough to expect an endless stream of magic candles and necklaces. Besides Eileen, nobody else is going to help him. Every trip back to what he shakily called the "real world" became less and less anticipated as his once safe apartment started to mirror the gross worlds on the other side of the hole. He hates that his one safe place is being destroyed and that thought lights a tiny flame of anger in his chest. At one point he considered just hiding in the tunnels forever since they seemed to be the only places where nothing could attack him.

It was a selfish want though. Eileen couldn't crawl through those holes with him. She didn't even seem to be able to see them which worried him more than anything else. She fought the monsters alongside him. It puzzled Henry that she couldn't see something that barely stood out amongst all of the other weird things the two of them faced. At times Henry wondered if he had finally snapped from being stuck in his apartment. He entertained that thought in order to push onward until it sank in that it was The Receiver and damn it he was going to receive whether he liked it or not. Accepting the terrible things that were happening in front of him as reality instead of hiding behind the hope that he was hallucinating was deeply rattling. Again and again the thought of "Why me?" slammed down on him. He was never into any occult stuff and the only dealings he'd had with Silent Hill was thinking it was a nice place to take photos. It helped to have Eileen there, even if she couldn't see the holes. Misery loves company after all--even misery that gets queasy thinking about being at a party.

In fact, Henry's role seems to be to simply listen. The people he meets do almost all of the talking. When met with monsters or terrible sights, Henry doesn't snark at them or even cry out. In fact Henry never raises his voice once during his entire adventure. By the time he reaches his pull-point, Henry is perhaps even more silent than when he started--anyone could be an enemy. Every sound could be a threat. Is anything even real? Could a scruffy shut-in photographer and an archaeology major do this? Henry feels incredibly dwarfed by the task and once he was all geared up to end the terrible ritual he'd found himself wrapped up in all hope seems dashed to pieces on the floor. Some reward for finally setting foot outside his door.

Howdy, Route! It's Wolfy the oldtimer here. You know what goes great with summer fun in the sun?

HORROR

Jack has been in the land of pokemon for nearly four long years now and he hasn't frightened much of anyone! While he had a good time putting on his haunted house (which he'll be doing again this Halloween) it wasn't really the same. It wasn't like the old days of stalking the living in the dead of night and sending them shrinking for the hills.

So that is what he is going to do.

THE LEGEND OF TALLFELLOW

Jack is going to put on a costume and with the help of the illusions created by his pokemon, start up an urban legend of his very own.

Depending on how interested people are, I'm going to start putting up 'encounter logs' so that people who are traveling between cities can have run-ins with the mysterious Tallfellow, a dark, towering figure dressed like a scarecrow. He stands, unmoving, between the trees until noticed. This mysterious creature cannot be caught. He disappears into fog when approached and sometimes never shows himself at all.

Spooky things he does to campers would include but are not limited to:
- lingering at the edge of their vision
- screaming in the middle of the night
- standing there unresponsive and menacing and then disappearing
- drawing circles in the dirt around campers once they have fallen asleep
- leaving odd gifts in their camps such as bundles of twigs and leaves or scraps of clothing/fur/wire
- Closer to Halloween, Tallefellow would take selfies on the gears of sleeping campers if they are left out where he can get to them.

Who knows what he will do next?

I thought this would kick up a little spooky fun because the best thing about urban legends is that everyone has a different take on them. Rumors start and spread and change and suddenly something new and terrifying is created.

THE MYSTERY

The thing is, this all hinges on people not finding out the identity of the Tallfellow right away.

I understand that the first thing most route travelers would do when faced with a mysterious figure in the middle of the night is call out their pokemon to attack. This can happen, however that will simply drive Tallfellow away. His pokemon may also attack back but it would be very rare. They would only step in if they felt Jack was in actual danger. Sometimes his image would be an illusion cast by his Noctowl or one of his many ghost friends.

The rumor needs time to grow and change. Tallfellow is something that would be spread across months with increasing and decreasing activity. The closer to Halloween it gets, Jack will become careless and start leaving clues behind. But by then the legend may have taken on a life of its very own! Who knows!

ENCOUNTER LOGS

So what's going to go down in these things anyway?

Once or twice a month (it depends on player interest) I will put up a log in the regular network comm as an [Action]. I will lay the setting and detail which general area the haunting will take place in. Jack's hauntings will primarily take place between towns but he may enter parks or regional forests as well.

Within will be a HANDWAVE thread where you can simply post OOC and I will detail an interaction for you so that your character can have a tale to tell.

The ENCOUNTER threads will be normal action threads where you can describe your character's camp and give old Jack a chance to show up. Multi-character threads are welcome too! Every encounter thread is guaranteed to go to the 10 comment A/C requirement!

What do you say, Route?
